  • TELL CONGRESS: SUPPORT VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAMS IN SCHOOLS

The STANDUP Act was just introduced in the House, and it would allow millions more students and educators to access training on how to spot warning signs of gun violence and how to intervene before tragedy happens. This bill is a crucial step toward preventing violence, including suicide and school shootings.

We need to demand the House pass this bill right away. We’ve trained more than 7.5 million students and educators how to recognize warning signs of violence, and we know that these interventions save lives. But Congress won’t act on its own – we need to encourage them to take action. Please sign our petition right now to call on the House to pass the STANDUP Act to protect children from gun violence!

  • Tell your representative to support the STANDUP Act
The STANDUP Act would require all schools to offer annual suicide prevention training to students and to train school teams in threat assessment. With your support, we can pass this law and help stop tragedies before they happen.
  • DEMAND ALL STATES PASS SAFE STORAGE LEGISLATION

Most guns used in school shootings come from family, friends or relatives, so it’s clear that safe storage laws can help prevent tragedies and save lives. That’s why we need to put pressure on all states to pass lifesaving laws that require guns to be safely stored.

Please, sign the petition now to demand state leaders pass safe storage legislation to prevent school shootings and protect children from gun violence.

  • Sign the Sandy Hook Promise Father’s Day Card

This Father's Day, thousands of fathers will spend the day without their children who have been killed by gun violence. It’s moments like this when we must recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to prevent other parents from ever having to face the devastating loss of a child to gun violence.

So please sign our Father's Day card to send your love and support – and a promise to do everything you can to build a safer world for all our children – to the fathers who've lost a child to gun violence.

  • TELL CONGRESS: TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS

We know Congress could pass legislation that prevents school shootings and protects children from gun violence – but they have refused to take action, even after 2018 saw more school shootings than any year on record.

We have to hold them accountable, but we need your help, and we’re several thousand names short of our 50,000-signature goal. Please, sign the petition immediately to demand Congress takes real action to prevent school shootings!

  • Tell the Senate: Pass Universal Background Checks!

The House just passed a bill to enact universal background checks for every gun purchase, but our work isn’t over. Now we have to fight just as hard to get this bill through the Senate and signed into law. We know this bill will save children’s lives – and 97% of Americans support it. But we may not have the votes we need to pass it.

We cannot lose this momentum – we have to put overwhelming pressure on the Senate to act, and we have to do it now. We need 25,000 signatures immediately, so sign your name now: Demand the Senate pass universal background checks!

Extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs) allow judges to temporarily keep guns out of the hands of people who show signs of being at risk of harming themselves or others. The Senate is considering a bill that would incentivize states to pass this kind of legislation to prevent future shootings and protect children across the country – but it won’t pass unless we put pressure on senators now.

Please sign the petition now to get the message to senators in time: We need ERPOs to help save lives and prevent school shootings!

On Tuesday, May 7, 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo was murdered in a shooting at his STEM high school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado – just three days before he was set to graduate. • Tell the White House: Keep 3D-printed guns out of dangerous hands

A federal judge in Seattle just temporarily banned the online distribution of blueprints for 3D-printed weapons. But the blueprint-maker involved in the case is ignoring the ban and selling them through its website anyway.

The White House has the power to stop the company – and to help save lives. Please sign our petition right now to demand that the White House keep 3D-printed guns out of dangerous hands.

  • Tell Betsy DeVos: Keep guns out of schools!

The Associated Press reports that the Department of Education is moving forward with a dangerous plan to allow federal funds to be used to arm educators across the country.

No teacher should carry the responsibility of deciding whether to take a life, and more guns in classrooms put children in even more danger. We need to be training educators to recognize the warning signs of gun violence and to intervene to get help for children who need it – not arming them with deadly weapons.

Please sign our petition right now to demand Betsy DeVos not allow federal funds to be used to arm educators.

  • Tell Betsy DeVos: Keep guns out of schools!

First, President Trump called for arming teachers after the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida. Now, The New York Times reports that his administration is considering making that dangerous threat a reality.

  • Tell Governors: Pass Extreme Risk Protection Order Legislation!

Extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs) allow judges to temporarily keep guns out of the hands of those who have shown warning signs of gun violence. Eight states have enacted ERPO laws this year – but we need your help to build on this powerful momentum and demand other states pass lifesaving ERPO legislation now.

Please sign the petition now to get the message to state governors: We need ERPOs to help save lives and prevent gun violence in our communities!

  • Tell state attorneys general: Keep guns out of dangerous hands

A company called Defense Distributed is fighting to make blueprints for 3D-printed guns available to the public – including ones like the AR-15 rifle.

They have been temporarily blocked after attorneys general across the country took action, but that ruling could be lifted at any moment – and then virtually anyone could print a gun or gun parts right in their own home. This would allow them to bypass safeguards like background checks and extreme risk protection orders that keep guns out of dangerous hands.

Please sign our petition right now to urge state attorneys general to continue fighting to ensure that dangerous weapons like 3D-printed guns don't get into the wrong hands.

  • Tell Your Governor: Apply for a STOP School Violence Act Grant

Sandy Hook Promise supporters came together to help pass the STOP School Violence Act in March, which means states can now apply for grants to fund initiatives like our lifesaving Know the Signs programs, which train students and adults to spot warning signs of gun violence and intervene before tragedies occur. But too few governors have taken advantage so far, and we need your help to urge your governor to take action now before the grant deadline.

  • Ban the School Shooting Game Creators' Account Now

Our loved ones were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary. Now, someone is glorifying their murder in a video game: The objective is to kill people in a school as an active shooter. Since we’ve pushed them off every other platform, they’re now frantically trying to hide their past branding, renaming their game and selling it using Stripe, Square and Amazon. They’re even taking feature requests from players who want to play the game as the shooters at Sandy Hook, Columbine and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

We can’t let this happen. Please sign our petition right now to tell Stripe, Square and Amazon to ban the school shooting game creators’ account immediately and withhold all funds.

  • Tell your state legislators: Pass gun safety reforms now!

Ohio is considering legislation that would help save lives by keeping guns out of the hands of people in crisis, strengthening the background check system and prohibiting the sale of bump stocks. Legislation like this may have prevented shootings like those that occurred in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Isla Vista.

But right now, legislators are overwhelmingly hearing from opponents of these commonsense reforms. We need 5,000 people to immediately raise their voices to save lives across Ohio.

The STOP School Violence Act (S. 2495) would provide funding to train millions more students and educators – with programs like Sandy Hook Promise's Know the Signs – to prevent gun violence and school shootings. It was just introduced in the Senate, and we need to demand the Senate pass this lifesaving legislation right away – because the price of inaction is more precious lives lost like the 17 people who were murdered at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

We need your immediate action to pressure Congress to act NOW, before another tragedy happens. Please sign our petition right now to demand the Senate pass the STOP School Violence Act to protect more children from gun violence!

In most cases of school gun violence, young people show warning signs before hurting themselves or someone else. The STOP School Violence Act (H.R. 4909) would give states the funding they need to bring efforts like Sandy Hook Promise's Know the Signs programs to schools so students and adults know how to spot and report warning signs of gun violence before a tragedy occurs.

In just the past few years, Sandy Hook Promise's Know the Signs programs have helped avert multiple school shootings and saved countless lives. Imagine how many more lives we could save if states had the resources to make their schools safer with gun violence prevention programs.

  • Tell President Trump and Congress: Keep Guns Out of Schools

President Trump wants to put guns in our children's classrooms. The answer to protecting children from gun violence isn't about arming teachers with guns. Instead, we must arm our educators to recognize the warning signs of gun violence and intervene to get help for children who need it.

Stand with Sandy Hook Promise and sign our petition now to tell President Trump and Congress: Keep guns out of our kids' schools!

  • Tell the Trump Administration: Meet with Sandy Hook Promise to Discuss Gun Violence Prevention

On December 14, we marked five years without our loved ones. But President Trump never acknowledged that it had been five years since the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Instead, Trump spent part of the day with NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre – and Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed there was nothing that could have prevented that terrible tragedy and others like it.

We know there are actions we can take to prevent tragedies, so we're calling on the White House to meet with Sandy Hook Promise for a conversation around the many ways it can protect more children from gun violence.

But we need your support to quickly reach enough signatures to get the administration's attention. Sign the petition now to tell the Trump administration to meet with Sandy Hook Promise and discuss ways to prevent gun violence and save lives.

The House could vote on WEDNESDAY on H.R. 38, a bill that would make it easier for dangerous people to carry concealed weapons across state lines and take loaded guns into schools.

Our representatives should be finding ways to come together to prevent gun violence – not overriding state laws that help keep our children safe.

  • Tell Congress: Make Large-capacity Gun Magazines Illegal!

Police found multiple large-capacity magazines at the scenes of the mass shootings in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Texas.

And our loved ones were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary by a shooter who used 30-round ammunition magazines. When he paused to reload, 11 children were able to escape.

That's why this new piece of legislation is so important to us: The Keep Americans Safe Act would prohibit the sale and transfer of large-capacity ammunition magazines above 10 rounds. Every time a shooter must pause to reload, there is an opportunity for lives to be saved.

Please sign our petition right now to tell Congress: Help save lives, and make large-capacity gun magazines illegal.

  • Tell the Senate: Fix the Background Check System to Save Lives

The Senate just introduced a new bipartisan bill to help fix the background check system and keep guns out of dangerous hands. This legislation might have prevented tragedies like the devastating shooting last week in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Momentum is surging for Congress to finally take meaningful action on gun safety reforms, so now is the time to keep the pressure on. We cannot wait for another horrific tragedy to do something. Sign the petition right now to demand Congress pass the Fix NICS Act (S. 2135) to save lives!

This legislation might have prevented January's mass shooting in Fort Lauderdale, last June's mass shooting in Orlando and the shooting in Isla Vista in 2014.

We need your help to send Congress a powerful message and demand action. Please sign our petition now to tell Congress: Pass ERPO legislation to help save lives and prevent gun violence in our communities!

  • Tell Congress: Protect Funding for Lifesaving School Safety Programs

The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was preventable. Programs that train schools to identify threats of gun violence and get students the help they need can prevent a tragedy before it happens. But right now funding for those programs is at risk in the Department of Justice appropriations bill.

This funding is critical if we're going to continue our lifesaving work at Sandy Hook Promise. So please, we need your help now: Sign the petition to tell Congress to protect funding for programs that train schools to assess threats and prevent gun violence.

  • Tell the Senate: Reject the American Health Care Act and Protect Mental Health Care

The House just passed the American Health Care Act, which would undo the lifesaving mental health care reform that we fought for four years to secure.

We can't change what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary or bring back the precious lives lost that terrible day. But we know that warning signs of the shooter's mental health issues were missed, and we know that protecting mental health care reform could prevent future tragedies.

We need to do everything we can to stop this bill in the Senate and protect more children from gun violence. Sign the petition to tell the Senate: Reject the American Health Care Act and protect mental health care to save lives.

  • Pass Mental Health Reform Now!

In nearly every mass shooting and gun-related death, warning signs were missed. While only a small percentage of people with mental illness will go on to hurt someone else, the damage they can do is immense – and irrevocable.

Early identification and help is needed to prevent gun violence before it happens, and that's exactly what the Mental Health Reform Act provides. The bipartisan bill promotes early intervention for children who display certain risk factors, along with research and treatment for millions of Americans suffering from a serious mental illness.

In memory of all who've left us so violently and prematurely, please stand with Sandy Hook Promise and call on the Senate to pass this crucial bill now.

  • “Promise Leader Conversation” Webinar

Sandy Hook Promise is hosting a special webinar to help prepare Promise Leaders to lead awareness-building conversations about our organization and its mission.

  • Sign Up for the Mental Health Reform Telephone Town Hall with Sen. Chris Murphy

Last month we achieved a major victory when the House passed bipartisan mental health reform by a near-unanimous vote. But we're running out of time to get this critical bill through the Senate and to the President's desk.

Please sign up now to join Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, Bill Sherlach (Mary's husband) and Mark Barden (Daniel's father) for a Telephone Town Hall on Tuesday, August 23, at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT, 6 p.m. MT and 5 p.m. PT) to discuss our strategy and what you can do to help.

Unable to make the call? You can immediately help by signing our petition demanding the Senate pass this crucial legislation without delay.

  • Join Sandy Hook Promise at the Disarm Hate rally in Washington, D.C.

After the horrific tragedy in Orlando, we once again demanded Congress pass commonsense gun safety reforms – but they still did nothing. Sandy Hook Promise volunteers, staff and supporters will meet at the D.C. War Memorial at 11 a.m. before walking to the rally together. If possible, please wear green so we are easier to recognize within the crowd. If you arrive after 11:15 a.m., please look for other people wearing green or with a Sandy Hook Promise T-shirt or sign.

  • Make the Promise to Help Prevent Senseless Gun Violence

No person should be afraid to gather with friends, go to school, attend church, watch a movie or just walk down the street and wonder if they might never return home again.

We must reject the notion that we can't do anything to prevent gun violence. These acts of violence are preventable, and there are actions we can all take in our own homes and communities to make a difference.

So please, make the promise to work together to prevent senseless gun violence – NOW.

  • Pass Mental Health Reform Now!

In nearly every mass shooting and gun-related death, warning signs were missed. While only a small percentage of people with mental illness will go on to hurt someone else, the damage they can do is immense – and irrevocable.

With the Senate's summer recess looming, time is running out to get the Mental Health Reform Act passed. Our goal is 200,000 signatures before we head to Capitol Hill on Thursday – and we're just 13,000 away.

Please, sign our petition today so we can send a powerful message to our leaders that these critical reforms can't wait.

  • Sign the Letter: Make Mental Wellness a Top Priority

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, sign our open letter asking that every American joins us to reduce stigma, promote mental health awareness and demand our leaders make mental wellness a top priority.

More than half of Americans with a mental health condition haven’t received mental health services in the last year – meaning millions of adults and children across the country aren’t receiving the critical help they need. Mental health issues that go unidentified and untreated can cause great harm, including increased risk of substance abuse, self-harm and suicide – and a small percentage could even go on to harm someone else.

We can save more lives and prevent future tragedies if more people know how to recognize the signs of mental illness and intervene to get support to someone who may need it.

We ask all Americans to join us in demanding our congressional leaders pass the Mental Health Reform Act now and urging our schools and communities to adopt programs that give mental health the attention and action this critical issue deserves.

  • TELL CONGRESS: SUPPORT RESEARCH FOR GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION!

We know that every gun-related death is preventable.

But Congress continues to block desperately needed federal research into how we can protect other children from gun violence.

Tomorrow is a critical deadline for urging Congress to support federal funding for gun violence research. Sign Sandy Hook Promise’s petition right now to demand Congress take action to prevent gun violence before it happens.

  • In Honor of Mother's Day: Make the Promise to Help Prevent Gun Violence

I don't want anyone else to spend Mother's Day living with the never-ending heartache of losing a child. And no one has to, because every gun-related death is preventable – if we all come together to make real and lasting change.

So please, in honor of my sweet little Daniel and all the children we can protect, make the Promise to work together to prevent senseless gun violence.

Our purpose is simple – to protect children from gun violence so no other parent experiences the senseless loss of a child.

With your support, we are making real and lasting change – of which you should be incredibly proud.

However, if you would like to receive fewer emails, sign up on this page and we'll only send you emails at the most critical moments – only a few times per month.

  • Tell the Senate: Mental Health Reform Can't Wait!

Recently the House and the Senate HELP Committee passed the Mental Health Reform Act with bipartisan support. Now the clock is really ticking to get this lifesaving bill to a full Senate vote before Congress goes on break – before another threat is overlooked and another family is devastated by a preventable loss.

In memory of all who've left us so violently and prematurely, please join Sandy Hook Promise to demand the Senate's leaders, Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid, schedule a full vote on the Mental Health Reform Act without delay.

  • Pass Mental Health Reform Now!

In nearly every mass shooting and gun-related death, warning signs were missed. While only a small percentage of people with mental illness will go on to hurt someone else, the damage they can do is immense – and irrevocable.

The bipartisan Mental Health Reform Act, for which Sandy Hook Promise has tirelessly advocated, is up for a big Senate committee vote tomorrow. But if we're going to get this lifesaving legislation past this crucial point and to a full Senate vote, we need you to act right now.

In memory of all who've left us so violently and prematurely, please stand with Sandy Hook Promise and call on the Senate to pass this crucial bill now.

  • Tell Congress: Fund Background Checks!

There's no question background checks save lives by keeping guns out of dangerous hands.

But right now our background check system is woefully understaffed, underfunded and missing millions of records – making it far too easy for the next mass shooter to slip through the cracks.

Tomorrow is a critical deadline for urging Congress to make funding and fixing background checks a top priority. Sign Sandy Hook Promise's petition right now to demand Congress take action to protect all of our children and communities.

In the three years since 26 precious lives were lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School, far too many additional lives have been lost to gun violence in this country. As a nation, we have to do better than this.

  • Thank President Obama for Taking Action to Prevent Gun Violence

President Barack Obama just announced long-anticipated executive actions to prevent gun violence.

The president's actions – including expanded background checks and increased access to preventive mental health care – will help keep firearms away from those who pose a danger to themselves or others and make our schools and neighborhoods safer.

President Obama acted because Congress has repeatedly failed to pass these commonsense measures supported by the majority of Americans. He will be both praised and criticized – so please join Sandy Hook Promise in doing the former by signing our thank-you card now.

On Sunday, our sweet little Daniel would have been 10 years old. I can't help thinking about how much he would have loved this milestone birthday: double digits, that first ten-speed, travel soccer ... all things I know he would have embraced with his trademark gusto and glee.

All we can do is work to spare other families the gaping, irreparable hole Daniel's murder has left in our lives. • Tell Your Senators: Support Mental Health Trainings to Help Save Lives

Violent actions don't usually come out of the blue. People don't just "snap" – there are warning signs and ways to detect them. Knowing the signs and intervening to get people help benefits everyone, but it is especially important for those who may hurt themselves or others.

The Mental Health First Aid Act is a commonsense, bipartisan bill that would expand mental health first aid training for teachers, first responders, school and college administrators, nurses, and others in a position to spot the signs of a mental health crisis before violence occurs.

Please urge your senators to co-sponsor the Mental Health First Aid Act now – so we can better spot warning signs and prevent tragedies like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary before they occur.

Pennsylvania towns, children and livelihoods are being put at risk by a bill passed in the State House today.

HB 1243, which could go to the State Senate as early as tomorrow, would allow any gun owner or gun owners' rights group to sue a town – even if they don't live there – for protecting their schools and neighborhoods. Cities would then have to pay the costs of defending these lawsuits, even at the risk of bankruptcy. It's outrageous.

Please contact your State Senator right now, and urge him or her to oppose this reckless and truly unprecedented legislation.

  • Happy Birthday, Daniel

Daniel on his birthdayNine years ago, our sweet little Daniel was born. Each and every day of his far-too-short life he inspired me – and he still does. He always will.

While it's tempting to spend the day hiding, mourning his absence even more than I do the other 364 days of the year, I'm instead sharing these stories to celebrate Daniel and spread his many messages of kindness, gratitude and joy.

Many who knew Daniel called him "an old soul." He was more perceptive than many adults I know. He often went out of his way to speak to a special needs child at school – telling others, "she can't talk, but I know she can hear me." The child's mother was so moved by his kindheartedness she asked for her child and Daniel to be placed in the same class.

Daniel's perceptiveness was matched by his generosity. Just a few days before he was taken from us, Daniel asked if he could pour himself some milk and then barely filled the glass. I asked, "Why?" He said, "Dad, you always have to leave enough for the next person."

    Daniel outside

After a rainstorm, he would patter out to the driveway – never mind who might see him in his pajamas or diaper – to rescue his "little worm friends" he knew were squirming, frightened, out of the safety of their homes onto the dangerous driveway, vulnerable in the hot sun. He'd return them to the cool grass and smile as one by one, they made their way back to nature – back to their families, where they belonged.

Daniel and his mom JackieIf you visited our home, Daniel would be the first to greet you, with a warm squeeze. And when you left, he'd follow you barefoot – regardless of the temperature outside – all the way to the driveway, holding Jackie's or Natalie's hand or riding on mine or James' shoulders, waving until you were no longer in sight.

Of course, these aren't just stories that make us smile through our tears. They help keep his memory alive and are valuable lessons about how we can – and should – all try our hardest, every day, to be generous, empathetic and kind. Like Daniel.

In honor of Daniel's birthday, will you promise to come together and help build a safer, kinder world for all our children?

Say thanks to our school heroes!

Last year, for the first time ever, I didn't take a first-day-of-school picture. Even though it pained me to know I wouldn't have a photo of Jake's first day of fourth grade, the act of recording him heading off to school without Dylan would have been even more painful.

Sending Jake back to school after Dylan's death at Sandy Hook Elementary was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do – and I was only able to do it because I knew with every fiber of my being that the school professionals with whom I entrusted Jake's safety would protect him with their lives if necessary. These capable, caring professionals – teachers and principals, janitors and bus drivers, nurses and administrators – who ensure our children come home to us healthy, a little wiser and well loved can only be described in one way: Heroes.

As all of our precious children head back to school, I hope you'll join me in signing a card thanking our school heroes and promising to work together every day to keep our children safe.

  • Tell Chris Christie: Our Children’s Lives Are NOT Trivial

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called a common sense bill limiting ammunition magazines to ten rounds "trivial" – a change we know would have saved more lives at Sandy Hook Elementary, possibly even the lives of our own children.

Not just that, but his veto came only an hour after we delivered over 55,000 signatures in support of this common sense measure and were told he wasn't available to meet us.

Governor Christie's refusal to meet with us is a cowardly political move, but his heartless words are a blow to the memories of our children – and a callous rejection of our promise to ensure their tragic deaths inspire change and save lives. We deserve better. The people of New Jersey deserve better.

So add your name now and join us in telling Governor Christie: Our children's lives are NOT trivial. Demand the governor reconsider this common sense measure – or at the very least meet with members of Sandy Hook Promise and explain to our faces why he doesn't think limiting high-capacity magazines amounts to "meaningful change."

He'd brought 10, 30-round, large-capacity gun ammunition magazines into the school. When he was forced to reload, 11 children were able to escape.

If magazines were reduced to one-third the number of rounds available that day, just think how many more could have survived.

In New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie is considering whether or not to sign a bill into law that would reduce the size of ammunition magazines to 10 rounds – and opponents of common sense reforms from across the country are pressuring him to veto it.

Please join Sandy Hook Promise in urging Governor Christie to sign this common sense bill that should be a model for all states, so that we can prevent the heartbreak Newtown families endured from occurring elsewhere.

  • For All the Fathers and Children: Promise to Work Together to Prevent Gun Violence

This is the second Father's Day we'll have spent without our beautiful sons, Daniel and Ben, who were senselessly murdered 18 months ago in the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Not enough has changed since that terrible December day. 74 more school shootings have claimed innocent lives, forever changed families and entire communities. We've heard Richard Martinez's primal scream upon losing his son in the Santa Barbara shooting – filled with the pain we know all too well. We've heard President Obama's sobering statement after yet another child was murdered: "This is becoming the norm, and we take it for granted in ways that, as a parent, are terrifying to me."

We can't let it become the norm.

This Father's Day, join us in promising to work together to prevent gun violence and ensure the safety of all children.

  • Tell Congress: Help Reduce Gun Violence Committed by the Mentally Ill

Recently, the U.S. House passed a bipartisan amendment boosting funding for the background checks system that helps prevent firearms from falling into the hands of criminals and the severely mentally ill. It's an important step – but it's only a first step.

Please contact your representative now to thank the House for taking this first step and urge them to now quickly pass a common sense bill to help reduce gun violence committed by the mentally ill, which we at Sandy Hook Promise believe will help save even more lives.

The Promoting Healthy Minds for Safer Communities bill would provide funding for community-based and school-based mental health programs, strengthen existing gun safety policies by keeping firearms out of the hands of those committed to mental health outpatient treatment and stop those convicted of stalking or domestic abuse from buying guns.

  • Make the Sandy Hook Promise: Not one more precious life. Not one more shattered family.

Mark Barden, whose son Daniel was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary, wrote this open letter to Richard Martinez, whose son Christopher was killed in the UCSB shooting.

Please read it and make the Sandy Hook Promise to help build a safer world for all our children.

    Dear Richard Martinez,

We have not met, but you are now part of our extended family. It is not a family we chose, but a family born from the horrible circumstance of losing a child to gun violence – one that's only growing each day. My heart breaks for you because I know just a little about the long road ahead of you.

We have reached out to you privately, but publicly we wanted to say to you and those feeling the sorrow, anger and frustration of this weeks' shooting, you are not alone. It has helped me, and some of the other family members who lost children and family at Sandy Hook Elementary, to come together and advocate for common sense solutions to expanding programs for mental wellness and gun safety solutions.

You will find your own path down this difficult road. But know that we are here for you and all of you who have been touched by this tragedy. Together we can and will build a safer world for all our children.

    With deepest sympathy,

    Mark Barden

  • Tell Your Legislator: Require Background Checks for All Gun Sales

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is scheduled to vote any day now on an amendment to HB 1243. This common sense bill would ensure mental health records are shared with the National Background Check System and closes the loophole that currently allows criminals and the severely mentally ill to buy rifles – like the one that killed 20 children and 6 educators at Sandy Hook Elementary – online or from private sellers.

We know that Pennsylvanians – gun owners and non-gun owners alike – overwhelmingly agree closing this loophole is the right thing to do.

Please rush a letter to your representative urging him or her to support closing the background checks loophole, which will save lives.

  • Tell Pennsylvania To Reject Gun Bills That Put Children’s Lives At Risk

Nobody should have to feel the pain and heartbreak of losing a child.

But right now some Pennsylvania legislators are trying to sneak through two bills that put children's lives at risk. One bill would do away with Pennsylvania's common sense background checks system, while the other would punish towns that enact local laws to keep their communities safe.

Add your name and join Sandy Hook Promise in urging Pennsylvania lawmakers to reject these dangerous bills.

  • Restore Common Sense In Georgia: Dangerous Criminals Shouldn't Have Firearms

Dangerous criminals shouldn't have firearms – that's just common sense.

But right now the Georgia legislature is trying to sneak language into a bill to extend protections to criminals with illegal firearms. If the bill passes, a felon who uses an illegal gun to kill someone would have access to the state's "stand your ground" law in his or her defense.

Please join Sandy Hook Promise in calling on the Georgia Senate and Governor to follow common sense and not put children's lives at risk.

  • Tell Facebook: Thank You for Helping Protect Our Children and Families

Facebook should be a place to share pictures of loved ones, catch up with friends and find out what's happening – not a place where children are exposed to ads for firearms or where people are able to promote illegal gun sales or trades without background checks.

That's why we worked with Facebook to develop a new policy that will help keep our children safe – both on the internet and in places where illegal guns might otherwise have fallen into the wrong hands.

Join Sandy Hook Promise in thanking Facebook for this common sense new policy that will protect children, educate users about lawful and responsible firearms transactions and help prevent illegal activity.
