Tell your representatives: Pass ERPOs in Maine!

As your constituent and a supporter of Sandy Hook Promise, I urge you to support Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws and LD 1312. I ask that you encourage your colleagues on the Maine Judiciary Committee to pass this bill upon its hearing on Monday, April 22. ERPOs allow families and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily suspend a person’s access to firearms if there is documented evidence that the person is threatening harm to themselves or others.

By intervening to temporarily remove guns already possessed and by prohibiting new gun purchases, ERPOs create safer circumstances for at-risk individuals to seek help (e.g., for substance abuse or mental wellness).

As a supporter of Sandy Hook Promise, I am committed to stopping gun violence BEFORE it happens, and ERPOs empower families to take action to temporarily remove firearms when that risk is identified. ERPOs are the next step to preventing gun violence in our state and providing access to help in moments of crisis.

I ask that you please support LD 1312 and encourage your colleagues to pass this ERPO through the Maine Judiciary Committee on Monday.
